sleepingmonk.com
Why don't we start off with a description of sleepingmonk.com?
This site it fairly large as it encompases the creative and professional endeavours of Calvin Tyndall. Since he has no intention of stopping, the site must be able to grow and update easily.
Due to the size of this site and the variety of content types, we've opted to use a content management system that we customize with PHP and CSS to our own needs. This is all modular and drives dynamic content to the browser with the use of a database.
Visually, the design is simple (on purpose). Since what's most important to us is the information presented and a user friendly interface, rather than flashy style and super-high impact visuals, we've chosen a layout and style that supports ease of use and is easy on the eyes.
We went for a simple interface to give our visitors easy access to whatever interests them while being home to large amounts of information.
Higher Level Entertainment
live-site
Higher Level Entertainment is my entertainment company. This is the second version of the site. The original was built completely from scratch and had limited functionality. It was little more than a digital brochure.
The company is growing and requires a better web presence for ease of marketing as well as to roll into product sales and offering richer content. We're in production on a number of podcasts so the site requires an easy way to syndicate content, allow users to comment or get involved in other ways.
This version of the site is based on the Drupal content management system (CMS). This powerful system gives us the flexibility we need right now and a solid foundation for expansion into eCommerce and whatever we feel like doing.
Thanks to the great open source community and the creation of these powerful content management systems, this type of functionality is within range of smaller budgets.
West Coast Monograms
live-site
Summary: This site was commissioned to replace an older site. On a modest budget and with no server side resources, (custom script capabilities), we were able to meet the needs of our client with a 6 page "brochure" style website.
The client specifically requested a detailed map and directions to their showroom so we provided a custom link to Google's map service, Google Maps. Being a company that deals in embroidery and clothing, a number of custom graphics were tested to look like stitched elements built right into the website. In the end, a subtle denim texture on the left panel and an embroiderd style footer and top bar were used. The logo in the top left was provided. All other graphics were custom built.
Technical: This site is built with to be as scalable as possible without backend scripting. It was a small enough site that backend programming was really not necessary anyway. New menu links and page content can be added with little difficulty. Due to the use of CSS (the modern method of styling web pages), visual style elements can be altered quite radically, quite simply. This comes in handy for updating the look of the site in the future to keep it fresh.
Rainbow The Clown
This site was a fun one and done on a tight budget! Rainbow the Clown is an entertainer from Calgary, Alberta. He was unsatisfied with a promo cd someone had done for him and asked for something more professional.
This site fully integrated the Rainbow the Clown style, using a rainbow to enclose the content of the pages as well as provide the navigation. Each stripe in the rainbow was a link in the main navigation.
The site architecture is pretty basic but the look of it shouts, "Rainbow!" and fits his personality.
